Captain Gramps
Meet Captain
Mark
One boat, one captain, and no version of this where somebody else turns up instead. Whichever cruise you book, Mark is the one at the helm.

At the helm — where he is on every charter, without exception.
USCG
Licensed
The federal credential a captain has to hold before carrying paying passengers.
45+
Years on the water
Not years in business. Years on the water, which is the longer of the two numbers.
20+
Years on the Sweet Melissa
One boat, long enough to have stopped thinking about it and started simply knowing it.
Captain Mark Barrett — Captain Gramps to almost everyone who has been out with him — is the USCG licensed captain of the Sweet Melissa, and has been for more than twenty years. He has spent over 45 years on the water.
He runs a single boat and every trip on it: dolphin cruises, sunset cruises, and full days out to Keewaydin Island. Each one is private, up to 6 guests, and never combined with another party.
One boat and one captain removes the gap entirely. There is nobody else it could be.
45 Years on the Water
Forty-five years is the number worth sitting with. More than twenty of them have been on this boat, in these waters, running these trips.
You Always Get Captain Mark
Mark runs every charter himself. Not most of them, and not the ones that happen to suit his diary — every one. There is no rotating crew, no second captain, and no deckhand who ends up running the trip. The person you spoke to on the phone is the person who takes the wheel.
It is worth being plain about why that is unusual. An operator with several boats and a roster of captains is selling you a service, and whoever is on shift that morning delivers it. That can be perfectly good. But the experience you read about and the experience you get are only loosely connected, and you find out which one you booked when you step aboard.
Here there is one diary, one boat, and one name on it.

USCG Licensed
Mark is licensed by the United States Coast Guard. In plain terms, that is the federal credential a captain has to hold before they can carry paying passengers, and it is the line between a charter and a man with a boat. Anyone can take you out on the water. Rather fewer are permitted to.
The Sweet Melissa
The Sweet Melissa is a 31-foot Stamas running twin 225 Suzuki outboards, and Mark has had her for more than twenty years. She carries up to 6 guests, with an enclosed restroom below deck and shade up top. Twenty years is long enough to stop thinking about a boat and start simply knowing it — which is the sort of thing you only notice on the water, not in a specification. There are photographs and the full detail on the yacht page. Every trip aboard her is a private charter, and shelling is included on all three cruises.
