Marco Island Shelling Tours
by Private Boat
No shelling trip to book, because shelling comes with all three. What a boat buys you is the shoreline nobody walked at seven this morning.
Included on every cruise • Up to 6 guests • You pick the length of the day
Shelling is not something you add to a cruise here. It is part of all three of them. There is no shelling trip to book, no shelling upgrade, and no separate price for it — whichever cruise you pick, stopping to shell is part of what the trip is. What the tide left is what there is, and it is different every time.
So if you came looking for a Marco Island shelling tour, the useful question is not which trip includes shelling. It is how long you want to be out, and at what time of day.
Why Shelling Is Better by Boat
The difference is access, and it is structural rather than a matter of luck. A beach with a road and a parking lot behind it gets walked from one end to the other every morning by whoever got there first. A stretch of shoreline with no road behind it does not, because there is no way to stand on it without a boat.
A boat also lets the captain choose. Wind and tide change which shoreline is worth stopping at on a given day, and none of that is visible from a car park. On the water you can look at two or three options and take the best one.
What nobody can tell you in advance is what will be lying there. Shelling depends on tides and weather that no operator controls, and anyone promising you a specific haul is guessing. Two things decide what you find: what the tide left, and how many people have already walked it. A boat only changes the second one — but that is the half nobody else can do anything about.

Why a Private Boat Matters for Shelling
Shelling is the part of a trip that is hardest to do on somebody else's clock. It is slow by nature, and it either takes ten minutes or it takes an hour depending on how interested you turn out to be.
On a boat carrying a larger group, the time ashore has to be fixed in advance, because everyone has to be back aboard together. That is not a criticism of how those trips run; it is what a shared schedule requires.
Here the boat is yours. Up to 6 guests, never combined with another party, so there is nobody waiting on you and nobody you are waiting on. If your group wants to stay and keep looking, you stay. If everyone has had enough after fifteen minutes, you go.
That is the same arrangement on all three trips — there is more about how it works on the private charter page.
What to Bring
Nothing on this list is unusual, and none of it will surprise you if you have spent a day on a boat before.
- Sun protection you can reapply — sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses. There is shade on board, but the water throws light back up at you and that catches people out.
- A light layer. It is cooler on the water than it is on shore, and cooler again once the boat is moving.
- Something on your feet you do not mind getting sandy.
- A camera or a phone, and somewhere dry to keep it.
- Motion-sickness tablets if you are prone to it — they work taken before you leave, not after.

About the Sweet Melissa
The Sweet Melissa is a 31-foot Stamas carrying up to 6 guests, with an enclosed restroom below deck, a cabin with seating, and shade up top — all of which matter more on a trip where you are getting on and off the boat. There are more photos and detail on the yacht page.
Your Captain: Mark “Gramps” Barrett
Captain Mark Barrett — "Captain Gramps" — is USCG licensed, with more than 45 years on the water. There is more about him on Captain Mark's page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is shelling included?
Yes. Shelling is included on all three cruises — the Dolphin & Wildlife Cruise, the Sunset Dolphin Cruise, and the Keewaydin Island day trip. There is no separate fee for it and nothing to add on when you book.
Do I need to book a separate shelling trip?
No — there is no separate shelling trip to book. Shelling is part of every cruise we run, so you get it whichever of the three you choose. Pick the trip whose length and time of day suit you.
Is the boat private?
Yes. Every cruise we run is private — the entire boat is yours for the trip, and your party is never combined with strangers.
How many guests?
Up to 6 guests. Because the whole boat is yours, that is the limit for your party rather than a capacity you share with anyone else.
Is there a restroom on board?
Yes. The Sweet Melissa has an enclosed restroom below deck, so you never have to cut a trip short. The cabin below also has comfortable seating, a refrigerator, and a kitchen area.

Whatever the tide left, we go and look at it.
